Student Loan Application

By Ally Too

The borrower must first complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form and submit it to the financial aid. A renewal FAFSA can be completed if the applicant has submitted a FAFSA in the previous year. The FAFSA can be completed online: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/Students/apply/express.html. If the student has already completed a FAFSA or renewal FAFSA for the current school year, he or she should submit a copy of their SIR forms. The Federal Government must receive the FAFSA or renewal FAFSA before any financial aid will be disbursed.

The borrower will then complete and submit the MPN (Stafford Loan Master Application and Promissory Note) and KSI financial aid application and paperwork. The Financial Aid Officer will counsel the student and determine the loan amount for which he or she is eligible. Once the certified loan amount is set and the borrower has returned the completed Promissory Note, the financial aid office will complete the School Certification Form. Students will have an Entrance Counseling session to explain all the rights and responsibilities of student loan applicants. Once the student borrower has finished their coursework or withdrawn from the school, any remaining loan funds in the student account will be returned to the Lender.

Students will have an Exit Counseling session to explain repayment responsibilities, options and terms.

What is FAFSA?

By Anubha Shyam

Each year, the Department of Education issues a new FAFSA for the subsequent academic year. You can either use the online version of FAFSA or you can obtain a printed copy of the application form from your high school counselor. If you intend to use the online version, then you would have to apply for Personal Identification Number (PIN). For this you would have to submit your name, date of birth, social security number and address. Once, you get your PIN, you can fill out the form and submit it online or print it and send it by mail.

While the printed version of FAFSA becomes available in the second week of October, the online version becomes accessible on January 1. Although the last date for the submission of FAFSA is June 30, but you can submit the form in either format as early as January 2. Most colleges and universities award financial aid on first come, first serve basis. Hence, to improve your chances of receiving financial aid, try to submit the FAFSA latest by March 1.

There are 102 questions in FAFSA, which are segregated into six sections. The primary aim of these questions is to retrieve your academic, personal and financial information. You would also be required to divulge your dependency status, colleges you want to receive your FAFSA results and your identification information. For filling out the FAFSA properly, you would need previous two years copies of your income tax returns.

Once you submit the FAFSA, the government will scrutinize it thoroughly, and then send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR typically includes a summary of your financial aid information and the EFC (Expected Family Contribution). The colleges enlisted in your FAFSA will also receive SAR. When you apply for admission in these colleges, you will be asked to submit additional financial information. Thereafter, your eligibility for financial aid will be calculated, and then you will be notified about the kind of financial aid package the college can award you.

Do You Make These Mistakes About College Financial Aid?

By Teresa Styles

* I dont need to fill out the FAFSA form because I wont qualify for federal loans.

Wrong. You need to fill out the FAFSA form if you expect to qualify for any sort of college financial aid, from any government entity or College Financial Aid office.

Organizations that provide grants, scholarships and private loan resources also often require a completed FAFSA form. It is the standard document for College Financial Aid of any kind.

* My Dad makes a lot of money and said hed help out, so Im going to bypass the FAFSA process.

Maybe he will help out, but that doesnt necessarily mean a four year free ride. It is also important to understand that if your parents are divorced, you need only list the assets of one parent on your FAFSA application.

Over half the marriages in this country end up in divorce. There are a lot of factors involving broken marriages that may dictate the level of support that a student will receive from family. So it is important to go on record with a FAFSA form that provides the most modest financial scenario possible should you need to seek college financial aid.

* Im not going to apply to the college thats my first choice because the tuition is out of reach and the school isnt going to reduce their costs for me.

No, they wont. But nearly every university has tuition thats out of reach for a majority of their students, and they know it. Thats why the well run schools have knowledgeable, creative and well staffed college financial aid departments. They know its essential to their survival as well as your enrollment.

There are a remarkable number of ways to reduce your yearly costs besides loans. Work study programs, grants, small scholarship programs from local non-profits; whats important to keep in mind is that the College Financial Aid department will be familiar with all the options. Be prepared to camp in their lobby and get all the direction you can. Be persistent and insistent and you will get results.

* Its going to take me forever to pay off these loans.

Not forever, but its going to take you a while. Its an uncomfortable feeling, until you consider the alternatives. Take note of the fact that three quarters of the work force in this country are people with no college degree.

Thirty years ago, those people earned about 20% less, on the average, than a college graduate. Today the disparity is 40% and getting wider, as our economy turns increasingly to service jobs with limited or no benefits.
